Welcome to Snowdrop and Tulip!
This year the children will be moving on from the play-based setting of Reception to become more independent learners. They will be developing their English skills through their daily input of phonics, reading and English sessions, working towards producing longer pieces of writing in a range of styles and for different purposes.
In Maths we will be following the White Rose scheme of work. The children will build on their knowledge of number and place value to become completely confident in using and manipulating numbers to 100 by the end of the year.
In the Autumn Term we will be learning all about ourselves! We will celebrate the diversity within our classrooms, year group and school and we will look at how schools have changed within living memory. We will use old and new toys to study how objects have changed over time, and link this to our science work about materials.
In Spring, we will have a Geography-led focus on towns and cities around the world, which will lead into our more detailed learning about the local area. In the Summer term we will extend our learning to include case studies in Africa, which will link to our science focus of identifying and classifying different animals. We intend all of our learning to be integrated so the children are immersed in engaging activities that span a range of curriculum areas.
Throughout the year, we enhance children's learning with a rich variety of educational trips. We will visit the Museum of Childhood and the Horniman museum as well as frequent visits to Southwark Park and walks around the local area.
Every four weeks, each class also has the opportunity to visit Blue Anchor Library to choose some books to read class and listen to some stories.
Tulip Class will have PE every Tuesday and Wednesday, and Snowdrop Class will have PE every Wednesday and Friday. Please can the children have their PE kit with them on these days – i.e. dark shorts, white T-shirt, socks and trainers. We work through a mixed curriculum of gymnastics, dance, team and invasion games, other ball games and athletics, focusing on balance, agility, teamwork and competition.
This year, maths homework will all be online, via the mathletics website. New activities will be assigned every Thursday, and children will be given their login details and passwords so they can complete it at home.
Children will also receive phonics homework on Thursdays, which is to be completed and returned by the following Tuesday. It should not take a huge amount of time, nor be a stressful experience for children and parents!
Children are also expected to read for 20 minutes each evening and to record their views of the book in their reading records. Please encourage them to do this, as it makes a huge impact on their learning!
If you have any queries or questions about this year please come and see us about it.
