Year 1

Class teachers

Snowdrop - Mr Lederer

Tulip - Ms Landeg

Welcome to Snowdrop and Tulip!

This year the children will be moving on from the play based setting of Reception to becoming more independent in their learning. They will be developing their English skills through their daily input of phonics and building upon their own ideas to create longer pieces of writing. They will also be building on their number and shape work, and becoming confident in using and manipulating numbers to 100.

Our topics for the Autumn Term will be ‘Who Are We?’ and ‘Toys’. In Spring we will be having a Geography focus on the wider world, which will lead into our learning about the local area. In the Summer term our topics will be ‘Africa’ and ‘Healthy Me’. We try to integrate our topic into all our learning and immerse the children in engaging activities that span a range of curriculum areas.

We enhance children's learning with a rich variety of educational trips. In Autumn Term we will go to the Museum of Childhood, which links to our toys topic and our Science focus on different materials. We will be exploring the local area throughout the Spring, and in Summer we will be going to the Horniman Museum to support our learning on Africa.

Every four weeks the class also has the opportunity to visit the local Library to choose some books to take back to class and listen to some stories being read.

Both classes have PE sessions on Monday and Tuesday. Please can the children have their PE kit in on these days – i.e. dark shorts, white T shirt and trainers or plimsolls. We work through a mixed curriculum of gymnastics, dance, team and invasion games, other ball games and athletics, focusing on balance, agility, teamwork and competition.

On Thursday, children are given literacy, numeracy and spelling homework each week, to be returned the following Tuesday. Children are also expected to read for 20 minutes each evening and to record their views of the book in their reading records. Please encourage them to do this, as it makes a huge impact on their learning!

If you have any queries or questions about this year please come and see us about it.
